AN ambitious £39m improvement plan for Withybush Hospital will include a renal dialysis unit within two years.

The dialysis service is just part of future developments for the hospital between 2007 and 2013.

As part of the plan the hospital will also get more single rooms and en suite facilities.

There are also plans for two new clean air operating theatres above the £8.75m A&E department and a new paediatric unit.

A larger chemotherapy day unit with more consultation rooms will also be established.

The creation of overnight accommodation for visitors and new staff residences for trainee doctors is also planned.

Director of operations for acute and community services Mags Barnaby said: "This plan is focused entirely on improvements to benefit Pembrokeshire patients. It is exciting and visionary and we know there is much to do."

She went on to say a new clinical decision unit in the A&E department would be able to quickly and accurately assess the needs of patients and decide what the most appropriate course of treatment would be.

She said: "The effect of the clinical decision unit means that we expect fewer hospital admissions and those who are admitted will be the most ill."

Much of the funding for phase one is already in place with business cases currently being prepared for other developments.
