A Milford Haven man was caught on camera stealing screws from a local shop.

Paul Rogers, of Richard John Road, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday.

The court heard that staff at the Best One Store, Milford Haven, noticed metal screw hooks had been stolen from outside the shop on January 20.

The six hooks had been used to secure a wind-break for tables and chairs outside the premises, and CCTV revealed a man acting suspiciously and appearing to remove the items using a tool the previous night.

The footage was shared on social media and shown to the police in an attempt to identify the culprit, and an officer recognised Rogers, 29.

Four of the hooks were found on a shelf and screwed into his living room ceiling when Rogers’ address was searched.

Mark Layton, defending, said: “They were screws in a pillar in the street. Mr Rogers saw them and thought they would be handy, he did not think of it as theft. It was an impulsive act, he went for a walk, saw them and helped himself.”

Magistrates fined Rogers £40 and ordered him to pay £30 compensation for the screws.

He will also pay £85 compensation and a £30 surcharge.
