South Wales Hockey League Division 2:

Llandysul 2-5 Milford Haven

LEAGUE leaders Milford Haven left early on Saturday for the long trip to Llandysul and nothing was going to stop this determined team continuing their fine winning run, not even a tree that had fallen across the road 20 minutes from Llandysul!

The girls decided they couldn’t wait and removed the branches with the help of stranded lorry drivers in order to play their game.

The effort duly paid off as Milford came away with a 5–2 win against their fellow promotion contenders to consolidate top spot in a bitterly cold encounter in Ceredigion.

The home side started brightly, threatening the Milford defence early on, but it was the visitors who struck first when Charlotte Davies nipped in front of the Llandysul keeper to finish Rachel Coe’s cross.

A second soon followed. this time Coe firing in after the home side gave her too much space in the D. The visitors looked in control but a lapse in concentration saw the home side finish off a swift counter and claw their way back into it.

However, on the verge of half time, Milford resumed control after Meg Jones found the backboard following a goalmouth scramble for a 3-1 lead at the break.

With their tails up it didn’t take the visitors long to score again as Davies drove into the D from a long corner and fired home for her second early in the second half.

The visitors looked full of confidence, moving the ball around nicely and and a fifth goal followed after with Jemma Phillips slotted in at the far post after some great build-up work.

Llandysul did manage a late consolation goal, but it was too little too late with the visitors comfortably sealing all three points.

“I was concerned that we would not get to the venue when we came across the blocked road but this just showed the spirit in this current Milford team producing,” said captain Emma Summons.

“It was another convincing performance, and a thoroughly deserved result on the road.”

The squad have a double header this weekend, away on Saturday to Llan & Llan and home to Swansea on Sunday, 11am pushback.
