A former mayor of Pembroke faces a long prison sentence after he was convicted this afternoon (Monday) of raping and indecently assaulting a girl aged under 10.

Pembrokeshire County Councillor David Boswell was also found guilty of indecently assaulting a different young girl.

One charge remains outstanding and the jury at Swansea crown court will return tomorrow (Tuesday) to try and reach a verdict.

Boswell gasped 'Oh Christ' as the jury returned a first verdict of guilty to indecent assault.

Judge Keith Thomas immediately remanded him to the cells below the court.

Boswell returned to the court later in the afternoon - having had his tie removed for safety reasons - to hear the jury convict him of the more serious offence of rape as well as additional offences of indecent assault.

He was also cleared of three additional charges of indecent assault.

The foreman assured Judge Thomas that, despite deliberating for more than nine hours, the jury could reach a verdict on the only outstanding charge if given more time.

Judge Thomas further remanded Boswell into custody, this time overnight at Swansea prison.

The rape conviction was by a majority of ten to two but the other verdicts were unanimous.

UPDATE: Tuesday, 11.15am:

Boswell was found guilty of remaining charge of indecently assaulting a child aged about nine.

He has been remanded in to custody and will be sentenced in July.
