VOTERS in Milford Haven's Hubberston ward will go to the polls today (Thursday), to pick their new representative.

Three candidates have put themselves forward for the role: Paul Coe, Julie Hawkins and Frank Hinley.

There are currently two empty spaces on Milford Haven Town Council, following the exit of Jon Thrower earlier this year, and Cllr Rhys Evans last month.

Cllr Evans, who joined the council in 2015, said he had found it difficult to juggle the commitments of his role with having a full time job, and took the reluctant decision to stand down.

"It was hard to be as hands-on as I would have liked to have been in the community, so I think it’s only fair that I stand aside and allow someone else the opportunity who has more time to allocate to the role," he told the Mercury.

"I joined the council when I was 19 and hold the record of being the youngest ever councillor elected to the town council.

"I’d like to see someone take that title from me, and would encourage any young people in the town who love where they live to get involved in the future.

"You don’t need to be interested in politics to be a part of the council, you just need to have a passion about where you live and a driven attitude of wanting to make a positive difference."

Cllr Evans said he enjoyed his time with the council, but was surprised how many people believed councillors were paid to take on the role.

"It is actually a voluntary role so juggling a paid job to pay bills between volunteering as a councillor can be a challenge," he said.

But, he said, having a say in the decisions that affect the town was very rewarding.

Cllr Evans added he hoped to return to serving the community again when time allows.
