LOCAL heroes were honoured at the first ceremony of its kind in Neyland on Monday night (September 17).

Mayor Cllr Simon Hancock praised the community groups, sporting legends and individuals who have helped make Neyland great over the last year - and some who have given a lifetime's service to the town.

Certificates were awarded to Neyland Cricket Club, who enjoyed an incredible year, winning the Duggie Morris Cup, winning the Division 1 title, and competing in the Welsh Cup finals in Cardiff.

Cllr Hancock said it had been an 'unprecedented year' with an astonishing record of success.

Neyland's vibrant bowls scene was also recognised, with a certificate for the ladies' bowls side.

The unsung heroes behind Neyland carnival were praised for their incredible dedication, without which the 'joyous day' would not take place.

He said this small band of volunteers showed the remarkable things people can achieve when they put their mind to it.

Awards also went to various individuals who have made 'astonishing contributions' to the town over many decades.

Ken Edwards, Owen Picton, Derek Charles and Lyn Rees all received certificates, as well as 19-year-old Callum Power, for his captaincy of the Disability Wales team.

Tony Organ was described as 'the embodiment of Neyland football', and Cllr Brian Phelan was praised for his 37 years of council service, and services to cricket and rugby.

The final award went to Joan Owen, in memory of her husband John.

Cllr Hancock spoke movingly about Mr Owen, of his charm, dedication to youth rugby, and lasting legacy.
