A feast of festive fun over the weekend has been hailed a great success despite dismal weather threatening to dampen the Christmas cheer.

The first Milford Haven Christmas Cracker event kicked off on Friday night and, after hundreds of families flocked to the town, the weekend will now become an annual event.

Organising committee member Lynne Turner said: "Although the weather did its best to ruin the day, it takes a lot more than high winds, freezing rain, and two inches of hailstones to dampen the enthusiasm of the people of Milford Haven.

"The lantern parade was a great success, and again I was shocked at the number of children and their relatives that turned out for the event.

"It can only bode well for the future."

The weekend included a funfair at the marina, an ice-skating rink, the lantern parade and face-painting in Charles Street.

Chairman of the Milford Christmas Cracker group, Andrew Blayney said: "Apart from the weather it was an excellent weekend.

"The Round Table were superb.

"The event helps to put Milford Haven on the map and brings the community together. We were overwhelmed with the response to the event."

Milford Mayor Tony Miles said: "It was a great weekend.

"Everyone worked so hard to put the weekend together, a special mention must be made to councillors Mike George and Tony Eden.

"The crowds at the light switch on ceremony were the biggest I've ever seen."

The Christmas Cracker committee group will begin planning Milford Christmas Cracker 2008 in the new year and promise that next year's festival will be even bigger and better than 2007.
