Port authority promise eases lorry

An end could be in sight to the problem of lorries parking up in Pembroke Dock, but only if £90,000 can be found, Angela Burns AM has said.

Up to 100 lorries have been parked in the dockyard waiting for ferries and their drivers have caused problems by cooking in the roadway, stringing up washing lines between lorries and defecating nearby.

Mrs Burns called a meeting with Pembrokeshire County Council, Milford Haven Port Authority, Pembroke Port and Pembroke Town Council at the end of last year to try to resolve the issue.

The port authority has come up with a possible solution, which Mrs Burns will be pressing the Welsh Assembly to partly fund.

She said: "The port authority has said that it is willing to surface Mill Forge, the area of land opposite the entrance to the freight yard into the ferry terminal.

"It is hoped that drivers parked up in this area will be able to use the showers, toilets and rest rooms in the freight yard which have been newly refurbished by Irish Ferries."

It is estimated that it would cost somewhere in the region of £90,000 to carry out the resurfacing work and negotiations are now underway to find the money.

She added: "I am delighted that we seem to be moving towards a solution in Pembroke Dock.

"I am grateful to the Milford Haven Port Authority for offering this land."

Mrs Burns said that it would be important for others to share the financial burden of the necessary improvement works.

"The port authority has said it will pay for some of the work but it shouldn't be expected to foot the whole bill.

She added:"I will be lobbying the Welsh Assembly to help fund this project and I will also be pressing the freight company Nolan's, whose drivers will be the main users of this facility, to make a contribution."
