Helping the elderly to reduce debts

Pembrokeshire's over 60s have had their debts reduced by £130,000 over the last 12 months, thanks to a project run by Help the Aged and supported by Barclays.

The Your Money Matters project, based at Haverfordwest Citizens Advice Bureau, offers free and impartial money management and debt advice to local older people through talks and one-to-one appointments.

Haverfordwest Your Money Matters Advice Worker Amanda Griffiths said: "When we launched a year ago we said we wanted to improve the skills, confidence and financial situation of local older people, and after a busy but exciting first year we're well on our way to doing this.

Volunteers from Barclays have provided invaluable assistance over the last 12 months, especially with running the group sessions that we organise around Pembrokeshire. It has been an extremely rewarding year, and we're committed to helping many more people who could benefit from the work the project carries out."

Kathy Brown, Barclays Community Relations Manager, Wales and West Region, said: " The Your Money Matters project at the Haverfordwest Citizens Advice Bureau is making such a positive and tangible difference to the lives of older people living in Pembrokeshire.

The project has made a great start and we're determined to fully utilise the expertise and the skills of our employees, in partnership with the knowledge and experience of Help the Aged, to continue this success into its second year."

Haverfordwest Your Money Matters is one year old this week and there will be a talk about the project at Saundersfoot this Friday (2 May), for the Saundersfoot Guild of Friendship.

If you think you or an older person you know could benefit from Your Money Matters, please contact Amanda Griffiths on 01437 765 324 for more information about sessions and appointments.
