Youngsters stranded at Lindsway Bay

4:00pm Tuesday 13th May 2008

An idyllic day in the sun turned sour for five young people when they found themselves stranded at Lindsway Bay.

The friends had spent the day water skiing with their two speeboats before stopping off in the bay for a barbeque. When they returned to their boats they discovered that the batteries of both vessels had gone flat.

Neither of the speedboats had any radio communication and one of the youths had to climb up the cliff path in order to get a mobile phone signal and contact the coastguards.

The port authority vessel, Skomer, was in the area and towed both boats back to Gelliswick beach.

"Fortunately the outcome of this trip ended happily," said a coastguard spokesman. "However, neither vessel had any radio communication in case of an emergency. There were life jackets on board, but they were not worn and there were flares stored on the boats.

"H.M. Coastguard advise all who venture out in boats to wear their life jackets at all times, ensure flares are in date and in a good condition and always have some sort of radio set fitted in case of emergencies.

"You never know when trouble can happen"
