Disabled support service hits a special milestone

An 80-year-old Milford Haven women has become the 5,000 person in the county to be supported by Pembrokeshire Care and Repair.

The independent home improvement scheme encourages people over theage of 60 and/or vulnerable disabled people to remain in their own home and live independently in their own communities by offering repairs and improvements to their properties.

The service began in 2000 and this week, 80-year-old Teresa O'Shea, from Milford Haven, will have work completed on her home, making her the 5,000th person to receivethe service.

Courtesy of Care and Repair'sservice, Teresa has had internal grab rails installed to assist with the different levels downstairs in her property and toassist her when using the stairs.

She said: "Even though I am used to living on my own and being independent, it's a great feeling that I can call on someone if I need extra help."

Having lived in the house since she was born, the house holds 80 years worth of special memories for the pensioner.

Teresa added: "Because of mobility reasons, it would be very difficult for me to continue living here without the added assistance of the rails and I owe a lot to Pembrokeshire Care and Repair for their kind care and support. I feel a lot more secure living on my own now because of them."

Manager of Pembrokeshire Care and Repair, Tina Mills, said: "All housing needs constant attention but it was found that many older people were living in dated housing that needed more attention than most.

"We are proud of the work we have done in helping 5,000 people in the county continue to live safely at home. There is still a lot more to be done."
