Proposals to develop 168 new homes in Milford Haven have provoked mixed reactions from local councillors.

Outlines for the plans drawn up for land at Dale Road, Hubberston, have been received by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Councillor Mark Hawkins, chairman of the Milford public works and planning committee, voiced concerns that the development would have a detrimental effect on the community.

“If these proposals are allowed to go through, it should only be under certain conditions,” he said.

Cllr Hawkins also expressed concern over the effects the development could have on local youngsters.

“The land currently keeps a lot of children off the streets and allows them to ride their bikes and so on, without causing disturbance.”

However, Councillor Rhys Sinnett said that the development could be a vital step towards solving housing problems in the area.

“We still have major issues with affordable housing. Fluctuating prices and the recent credit crunch has made it difficult for people to get onto the property ladder.

“If the development contains a high percentage of affordable housing then it would be great for Milford Haven.”

Cllr Sinnett did stress that there are a number of issues to work through before the plans can be backed by Milford town council.

“It’s a complex procedure, but anything that can be done to help the community must be supported,” he added.

The plans have twice been passed by Pembrokeshire County Council, originally back in 1997 and then as an amended version in 2001.

Cllr Hawkins was bemused as to why the situation had been drawn out for more than a decade.

“Despite the length of time these plans have been in place there are issues, particularly regarding site access, that need to be addressed.”

The proposed development is set to be discussed by Milford town council’s public works and planning committee meeting on Monday, September 8.

Affordable housing is great in principle especially with the current shortage. However if the site is left in disrepair, as the old Sir Benfro site at Herbrandston has been left (a great loss to the community), better left alone.

Pembrokeshire is losing its charm with the unwarranted expansionism of charming rural villages. Is there no proper control with planning applications ?
