A PEMBROKE Dock couple set off today (Thursday) to embark on a seven day, 2,500 mile drive across Europe, all in aid of charity.

Jane and Bernard Evans, of Pembroke Road, will take part in the LandyRally, now in its second year, setting off from Calais on Saturday.

They will travel 678 miles from France, through Spain, in the first day alone.

Bernard has spent a lot of time and money working on the Range Rover named ‘Taffy and his dragon’ for the journey.

He has also installed a CB radio, which he admits the couple have no idea how to use.

Along the way, the specially adapted Range Rover will be put to the test when it is driven over tough terrain. The couple will also complete daily tasks to gain extra points, such as taking pictures of landmarks along the route.

They will share driving and navigation duties but Bernard admits he is dubious about his wife’s navigation skills.

He said: “She gets lost driving in Pembrokeshire.”

The national children’s charity, Jeans for Genes, which supports research and raises money for the care of children with genetic disorders, is one of two charities the couple hopes to collect funds for.

A diabetes charity will also benefit from the trek. It is a local charity close to Bernard’s heart, as he is diabetic.

Jane, who is a nurse at Withybush Hospital, said: “We have had great support from local businesses and people already.”
