Daniel aims for games success

A Pembroke Dock teenager is on target to compete in the Commonwealth Youth Games in India next month.

Daniel Court has been selected to compete in the games, which take place in the Indian city of Pune.

Daniel will be representing Wales in shooting and will be one of the 37-strong team of young Welsh athletes at the games.

The announcement of Daniel’s selection to the team was made at the youth team day held last weekend in Swansea. The Welsh team will also consist of ten swimmers and eight boxers.

Daniel said: “I’m really pleased to have been selected for the Wales Commonwealth Youth Games team and to be given the opportunity to represent my country. “I’m really looking forward to the experience and will be working hard over the next weeks with final preparations for the games.

The 18-year-old practices at the power station club in Pembroke and Pennar Junior school.

He added: “The success of the athletes from Wales at the Beijing Olympics has been a real boost to me too and I can’t wait to get to Pune to compete.”

Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Council for Wales director said: “The Youth Commonwealth Games are very important for young athletes as it gives them invaluable experience of competing on an international stage. “Many of the athletes taking part in the Youth Games will be strong candidates for Delhi 2010 and for London in 2012.”

A total of 71 countries will compete at the Youth Games in Pune between October 13 and 19.
