Mental health unit brings 80 jobs

A £4m development to build a mental health hospital in Pembroke Dock is bringing 80 new jobs to the area, the Mercury can reveal.

The 16-bed independent hospital will be operated by Welsh healthcare company Surehaven Ltd and will be located adjacent to South Pembrokeshire Hospital at Fort Road.

The facility will provide care for people aged 18 to 65 who might be liable to be detained under the Mental Health Act 2007.

The development will also include an eight-bedded building for people with learning disabilities.

Surehaven managing director Keith Woodall said the company hoped to work closely with the local health board and clinicians to provide the best possible care for patients in the county.

Mr Woodall said: “We aim to provide local services for local people with learning disabilities and mental health problems.

“A number of people currently receive their care many miles away from their home, their families and friends.”

As well as large individual bedrooms with full en-suite facilities, the hospital will have activity areas and quiet rooms.

“We are very proud of this facility and we will be inviting the people of Pembrokeshire to our open days to see for themselves what we have achieved here,” he added.

The company confirmed it is currently working with the Pembroke Dock job centre recruiting local people to fill the job vacancies at both units on the site.

The development is well underway and it is envisaged the service will be up and running as early as January next year.

Lets hope they do employ "80" new members of staff unlike the so called staff in Haverfordwest. They don't know their job, they don't care about their job!!! They are absolutely worthless. The poor people who rely on their services. My mother died in the only place I thought she was safe. Still no explanation..

This must be good for Pembroke Dock, judging by recent press reports the place is awash with 'nutters'

I hope Minnerva(or his/her family)will never have the need to use the new facility being built in Pembroke Dock. My brother in Mid Glam had an acute psycotic episode a few years ago(through no fault of his own).It was the most frightening couple of weeks in my family's life.He spent about 7 days in a mental health unit, where the staff were amazing. He's fine now but the whole incident will stay with my family forever. It has made us more sympathetic towards people with mental health issues. Being labelled "Nutters" does not help.
I hope the new unit is a great success - good luck to it and it's patients.

Apologies ValleyGirl,

But no malice intended, this was only a comment on the general disorder that is currently awash in our local towns and caused by what are 'supposed to be' able minded folk. This was a lighted hearted riposte rather than directed at genuinely affected patients. Lord forbid if any humour might be misinterpreted.
