Safe Haven steps up pressure at Stack Rock Fort

On the same day that they made public the findings of an independent expert report, LNG campaign group Safe Haven unveiled an 80 foot banner just metres from the South Hook LNG terminal.

The huge banner reads "Safe Haven: put public safety first why hide the facts? Release the LNG safety reports now! Release the emergency plans now!". It has been rigged across Stack Rock Fort next to the South Hook jetty.

The supertanker carrying the first shipment of LNG has left Qatar and is expected to arrive in Milford Haven this month.

Safe Haven say that they are in the process of taking out a two year lease on the fort, which is privately owned by a Milford Haven businessman, and have all sorts of plans for its future including setting up a webcam and a website and erecting a new and improved banner in the near future.

Safe Haven spokesman Gordon Main said that the pressure group has a 24 hour a day presence on the CADW protected fort and will use it to further their campaign for openness and accountability by the port authority and the LNG companies, especially regarding the marine based side of LNG operations in Milford Haven.

He said that the presence of the group on the fort was also to highlight the findings of an independent experts report commissioned by Safe Haven, which concluded that no marine based risk assessment into LNG has been carried out.

"There are unanswered questions here and that's not good enough," said Mr Main. "Is this safe?We are still, after four years, asking the port authority to ask and answer that question regarding the marine side of the operation.

"We feel a public duty to keep doing this. The answers are not being given. We are all doing this as private citizens at our own expense to try and make sure that the residents of Milford Haven are safe. We won't stop until we've done this."

Milford Haven Port Authority said: "A comprehensive range of professional risk assessments have been undertaken. As well as making use of work carried out or commissioned by others, we have ourselves undertaken or commissioned from experts many risk assessments as part of the process of determining the way in which we will regulate and manage LNG ships.

"This myriad of separate but interlocking risk assessments, information gathering exercises and training have determined how we will manage and control LNG shipping safely along with all other shipping and leisure craft movements in the port."

And the Port Authority still refuse to release the assessments citing "commercial sensitivity". I'd like that phrase explaining from an organisation that has a monopoly in the haven. The local concerned population is not seeking to stop LNG just know we are safe with it on our doorsteps. After all if the informed decision of the (alleged) concerned few is to move away to a safe distance that would hardly be serious or theatening to the safe operation of the port.

The use of commercial sensitivity and the threat of terrorism by the MHPA are poor excuses in a desperate attempt to defend the indefensible. Commonsense says there is no way such a massive installation with horrendous potential should be located and operated where it is and against all recommendations and guidelines. Despite the misinformation LNG is a completely different material to the predominantly liquid hydrocarbons processed by the refineries which are liquid containable. LNG once containment is lost be it from tanker, storage or processing is an expanding gas cloud creating an accident ready to happen and the consequences are at the whims of weather, size and ignition source. So much for questionable & hardly impartial reassurances from commercialy vested interest companies. Any confidence can only be reestablished by transparency of the MHPA to valid and important questions rather than denial and ambiguity. The protesters have my total support.

LPG gas ship is currently on fire off Dubai having collided with cargo vessel.

Full transparency of all risks, systems readiness and mitigation measured must be available to the public if only to reassure.

The "Tembek" is currently parked off Gibraltar and is waiting for terminal work to be completed before sailing to Milford Haven.

Can someone tell me what all the fuss is about, LNG has been moving about the world since 1944.
How many accidents world wide involving LNG ships have there been?
Please list all known disasters where LNG ships have blown up and damaged the local area?

With reference to Perry in Neath just because there is no "regular" events it does not make it safe eg Buncefield explosion & fire, Trade Centre 9/11, Space Shuttle, Chunnel Disaster its not the events its the potential and proximity. Common sense says you do not construct these installations in close proximity to a residential area with a population of 25000+ people!!!. There are plenty of LNG close calls and fatalities which if you care to review the web data is easily accessible. Perhaps you could assist by hoping Milford haven is not the first statistic caused by "an unforeseen incident" or "combination of abnormal events" or "human error" which are the normal cover up cliches!!.

So it's a potential bomb and Safe Haven set up camp as close as they can to it.
Doesn't sound like the actions of somebody who is convinced of the scare stories that they have been spreading, or has common sense been indoctrinated out of them?

all i gotta say is the oil refining process is alot more dangerous than the lng process. i've learnt this through courses i've had to do through work on the svitzer line boats. there could not possibly be anymore saftey procedures. it is gonna be safe and it isn't gonna affect anyone
