Work on a much anticipated traffic scheme at a busy Milford Haven crossroads will finally commence later this month.
The South Wales Trunk Road Agency (SWTRA) has confirmed that work to put in traffic lights at Steynton crossroads is due to begin on Monday, June 15.
Milford Haven county councillor Stanley Hudson said: “I am very pleased that the money has been found and the project to install traffic lights at the Horse and Jockey junction is to commence.”
SWTRA said the initial phase of work between June 15 and 30 would be undertaken with minimal traffic management to ensure limited disruption to road users.
Phase two of the project beginning on July 1, will require temporary traffic signals and is scheduled to be “substantially completed” during the school summer holidays when traffic flows are lower.
A SWRTA spokesman said: “The traffic management will be in place to protect the workforce and control the flow of traffic.
“This is a busy crossroads on a heavily trafficked section of road and every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience to local residents and road users.”
Cllr Hudson said although some disruption was inevitable the completed scheme would improve life for the community.
“Inevitably there will be disruption to life temporarily but the end result – safer roads, speedier movement of traffic and fewer accidents – should make the inconvenience worthwhile.
“Life in the north ward of Milford Haven should improve and all those who fought for this scheme are to be commended and have reason to feel a degree of satisfaction,” he said.
Milford Haven councillor Derek Davies, who keenly followed the progress of the Steynton traffic scheme, added: “Better late then never.”
