A 15-bed extension to the Torestin Care Home, Tiers Cross, was approved this week by Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning committee.
The 600-square-metre extension, on the south side of the building, will house 15 en-suite rooms, a communal sitting room and additional kitchen facilities.
The car park will also be expanded and a new garage and storage building will be built on the site.
“I have been led to believe that it is a well-run establishment and I know that people from Pembroke Dock work there, so I have no problem in proposing it,” said Cllr Brian Hall.
“It is probably a facility that most of us will need in the future.”
The care home currently employs 36 full and part-time staff.
The owners have said another 13 would be required if the extension went ahead.
And although several aspects of the project did not fall in line with some aspects of planning guidance, council officers recommended it be approved for the sake of employment and the continued viability of the home.
Deputy leader of the council, Jamie Adams, pointed out to the committee the need for care homes with the country’s ageing population.
“It is an industry that will have to expand to care for the increasing number of elderly people,” he said.
