Students get the nod in school council election

Four students have topped the poll in a school council election at Milford Haven Comprehensive School.

Sam Brown, Callum Picton, Marcus James and Luke Reynolds proved popular with their peers in the year eight election this week.

The four were among six candidates who stood for four vacant year eight representative places on the school’s council.

Organised by Pembrokeshire County Council in partnership with the school, the ballot was modelled as closely as possible on a real life election and is aimed at encouraging young people to vote in the future.

The candidates each gave a presentation on their policies in a bid to win support before pupils cast their votes in the school’s polling station. Among the issues discussed were canteen food, school trips and non-uniform days.

Cllr Huw George, cabinet member for children and young people acted as the returning officer.

“We want to encourage young people to vote in the future by familiarising them with the democratic process and there is no better way than by getting involved in elections while at school,” he said.

“Although approached in a fun way, the youngsters were standing on issues that affected them.”
