Glowing tributes to 'lovely' councillor

A Pembroke councillor who died at the weekend has been described as a ‘lovely and well liked’ person.

Councillor George Relleen, who was 76, died after a battle with cancer. In a glowing tribute, the Mayor of Pembroke, Councillor Pearl Llewellyn, said he would be sadly missed.

“He was only with us a year but the time he spent here was much appreciated,” she said.

“He brought with him a wealth of experience and was a lovely and well liked person.

“He was a friendly face who was always on hand with a friendly word.”

Cllr Llewellyn added Cllr Relleen would be missed by the whole community and that the thoughts of the council were with his family.

He joined the council in July 2008, having lived in Pembroke for more than 30 years beforehand. Renowned for his voluntary work in the town, he was also a past president of Pembrokeshire District Rugby Union, chairman of Pembroke RFC, a member of the Rotary Club of Pembroke, Pembroke Chamber of Trade and Commerce and Pembroke Power Station Club.

Charles Davies, who worked alongside him during his tenure as PDRU President described him as an ‘excellent worker’.

“He was here, there and everywhere,” he said.

“He always took part in debate and expressed his views. He was fully committed to whatever he was doing and always prepared to help.”

His funeral will take place at 2pm this Monday at St Michael’s Church, Pembroke.
