The annual Pembroke Dock Fire Station Schools Firework Competition, sponsored by Chevron and Pembrokeshire County Command, took place recently.
The event was organised by Pembroke Dock Fire Station and aimed at the 12 junior community schools in its catchment area, from Angle CP through to Jeffreyston.
Each school was visited by station personnel prior to fireworks night, and the children were given a talk on the dangers of fireworks and how to enjoy them safely.
They were then asked to demonstrate what they had learnt in the form of an information leaflet and a poster. The leaflet aimed at years five/six and the poster for years three/four.
Excellent prizes were awarded, thanks to main sponsors Chevron Pembroke, and Pembrokeshire County Commander Nick Webbley.
In addition to the main prize, the school responsible for the winning leaflet also gets a shield to display for 12 months.
There were more entries than previous years and the quality showed great talent within the community.
The winners were chosen by Pembroke School art teacher Mrs Laura Saunderson, who enjoyed the many wonderful messages and brightly coloured entries.
This year, the fire station has secured funding through Safer Pembrokeshire for the winning leaflet and poster to be printed ready for next year’s competition.
Darren Kenniford of Pembroke Dock fire station thanked Ceri Doyle of Dyfed-Powys Police and the manager of the Littlewoods store in Milford Haven for their help.
Winner of the leaflet competition for years five/six was Molly Smith of Pennar School who was given a laptop. Runner-up, Billie Crocker of Monkton CP school, won an i-Pod Nano.
Dylan Morgan of Golden Grove won the poster competition for years three/four and received an LCD TV and DVD player. Runner-up was David Castro of Lamphey School who received an i-Pod Nano.
