Scheme engineers interest in energy

Two Pembrokeshire schools will be encouraging pupils to consider engineering as a career choice thanks to an educational programme funded by the owners of Pembroke Power Station.

RWE npower will deliver its Enthuse programme to Pembroke School next week and to Milford Haven School later in the year.

Nearly 400 pupils will take part in activities designed to help them think about the impact science and engineering has on their daily lives.

Enthuse, which is part of RWE npower’s Brighter Futures programme, is a five-year scheme designed to inspire and engage 12 to 14 year olds in science, technology, engineering and maths. It is the first time it has come to Pembrokeshire.

Ken Davies, head of design and technology at Milford Haven School, said: “Experts will bring a range of skills into the school that pupils might not currently be getting through the normal curriculum.

“We have always placed great emphasis on engineering, but much of what we do is done as a ‘bolt on’. We felt the programme was a chance to get a whole year group to experience the world of engineering and to encourage our younger students to consider engineering as a subject and career choice.’’ The programme encourages pupils to think of ways to improve existing products, or to design a completely new concept, before considering the very real problem of how the UK can meet and reduce its future demand for energy.

These activities are followed by a ‘facts and fiction’ session, where the students are given the opportunity to meet with a team from RWE npower, including Clive Smith, manager of Pembroke Power Station.
