£80,000 charity boost

AMEC and Milford Energy Limited (MEL) workers have raised more than £80,000 for local charities thanks to a safety scheme set up by the companies.

Around 15 charities were presented with cheques at a special ceremony held at Waterston Village Hall last Tuesday, February 2.

Engineering giant AMEC and MEL agreed to pay £10 a day for each worker, for every day they avoided an accident at work at the Milford LNG terminal.

Remarkably they managed to go more than 17 months without an incident and were able to raise the massive sum of money.

Many local charities were chosen by specific teams such as Cancer Research Pembroke, Tenby RNLI, Pembrokeshire Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Paul Sartori and the Ty Hafan Hospice.

Jamie Marr, AMEC project manager said: “This is a celebration, the end of a strenuous project. We’ve got about 15 causes and the best part of £80,000 to give away, with more cheques to come.”

Each nominated charity received one cheque from AMEC and one from MEL for the same amount.

Senga Waddilove, chairman of the Pembroke Cancer Research UK Committee, said: “Today we’ve received £10,846, half of which will go to the charity shop in Haverfordwest.

“To have a sum like this is fantastic and we would like to thank everyone involved.”
