Dear editor Re. Safety fears over Neyland's Traffic Problems (Mercury, January 20).
One solution to the problems would be to create a single-lane, one-way traffic flow down the High Street, then left along the front and up Riverside Avenue.
Heavy goods vehicles would be banned from Riverside Avenue and exit Neyland via Military Road/Sentry Cross.
This scheme offers the following advantages:
1 Reducing the route to a single carriageway will increase the area available for pedestrians.
2 The new pavements would be recessed to provide dedicated loading bays, bus stops and short-term parking spaces. This would end both the gridlock and reduce the risk of accidents.
3 The new pedestrian friendly area could be enhanced by encouraging local people to sponsor the planting of trees.
4 Visitors to Neyland would still enter via the High Street, only now they will be more inclined to stop and shop at the variety of retail outlets and hostelries before going on to visit Brunel Quay and the marina.
Yes such a scheme may cost. In my view any costs will not be prohibitive when weighted against the benefits
C Shutt Neyland
