MILFORD Haven is gearing up to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the death of Admiral Lord Nelson, who famously described the town as one of 'the finest harbours in the world.'

To commemorate the death at the battle of Trafalgar of Milford's most famous visitor, a week-long series of events is being planned to take place during 'Nelson Week' at the end of May.

Stella Hooper, Maritime Heritage Officer at Milford Haven Port Authority is helping to co-ordinate the week, which will run from May 26 to Saturday June 4, and hopes it will be a big success.

She said: "It should be a good week and we are hoping everyone who wants to contribute will do so and it will be a success. It's nice to have something to look forward to and I hope we will be celebrating this part of the SeaBritain festival in style in Milford Haven."

Nelson Week will celebrate Milford's maritime history and include a visit by the tall ship Tenacious which will be open to the public before sailing to Southampton, with Milford Haven Town Council sponsoring a berth on the voyage for one lucky person.

Classic boats from the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society will be present on the water during the week.

A raffle will be held for an oil painting of HMS Victory which has been commissioned especially for Nelson Week, an art exhibition at the Elizabeth Venmore Centre, a French Market on the dockside and events at Mitec will all take place before Nelson Week is rounded off with Milford's premier civic event, Founders' Day on June 4.

The programme for Nelson Week is still being arranged so more exciting activities and events are sure to follow. The event is supported by the European Union's Interreg programme through the Welsh Assembly Government.

A website including the events planned for Nelson Week will be on line soon and a leaflet of all the activities, entertianments and competitions will be available.
