Goodwick United 3 Pennar Robins 1

TWO goals in extra-time sent Goodwick into the semi-finals of the Senior Cup and broke Pennar Robins' hearts on Saturday.

Barry Hayes and Adam Raymond pounced to grab a dramatic win and the Phoenix Boys will be looking to go all the way after coming from behind to win the cup tie.

Chris Lloyd's young Robins team held firm during a goalless first 45 but they had a few scares when Barry Hayes fired over and 16 year-old goalkeeper Daniel Roberts had to be at his best to keep out Alan Davies' header.

The Robins' attacks were kept to a minimum but they did have one good chance when Gedion Hockin's dangerous cross narrowly missed the onrushing Mike Canton.

The closest either side came to a goal was when Steve Evans fired a rasping volley against the post from Paul De Groot's pin-point cross. The Robins were inspired by the 0-0 scoreline and came out for the second period with far more attacking intentions.

They had two penalty appeals turned down by referee Richard Stephens but, around the hour mark, they snatched the lead.

Nathan Hughes' free-kick was too hot to handle for Goodwick keeper Darren Turner and Hockin was first to react and bury the rebound.

The Robins were now on top and a chance to double the advantage went begging at a crucial time. Gareth Stewart, on for Andrew Green, looked all set to finish his opportunity but an extra touch meant the chance was lost and Goodwick breathed a sigh of relief.

The home team didn't panic and Dai Hayes scored the equaliser that sent the tie into extra-time. Wayne Sullivan's well-flighted ball was met by Sullivan's header and the ball floated over Roberts and in.

Then Sean O'Connor's Goodwick side went ahead for the first time. De Groot's looping ball into the box gave Roberts all sorts of problems and when the keeper scooped the ball out from under his bar Barry Hayes swooped to score.

The Robins were on the ropes now and Goodwick threatened to kill the game off there and then. But Roberts kept his side in the game with a fine save down low from De Groot and also turned a powerful drive from Steve Blackford away.

But the momentum was with Goodwick and with five minutes of extra time remaining Kevin Bowen drifted into a shooting position and fired into the far corner to wrap up the win.

Pennar were gutted to lose a game that they had put so much into but Goodwick march into the semi-finals.
