THE 60TH anniversary of VJ Day was marked with commemorative services in Milford Haven and Haverfordwest on Sunday.

Crowds gathered to remember the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.

In his speech on the day, mayor of Milford Haven, Cllr Rhys Sinnett, said: "Some of you here today fought in that war as young men, and we make this pledge to you - that we will always honour the character and the achievements of your brave generation."

Bishop Ivor Rees and Canon Geoffrey Gwyther conducted the Haverfordwest service at the War Memorial.

The Johnston Band provided the music.

Wreaths were laid during the service as the names of the fallen were read out.

In a change to the usual format, the Burma veterans took the salute during the march-past.

A hand made quilt, which is to be first prize in the women's section winter draw, was also on display.

After the event, Cllr Sinnett added: "I don't think we say often enough how grateful we are to the veterans of World War II for the service they gave this country and our town.

"I hope this service on Sunday was just one simple way of honouring all that they gave to us."
