Lesley engineers design prize

An A-Level student from Milford Haven Comprehensive School has scooped a top engineering prize at the Big Bang Cymru, the largest event of its kind in Wales.

Lesley Fitzgerald represented her school at the Big Bang with her ambient lighting system project and won the design innovation and presentation category (ages 17-18) in the young engineers competition.

“My brief was to design and create a lamp using computer-aided design that would be suitable for IKEA and Habitat customers,” she said.

“I carried out market research and gathered inspiration from artists such as Antony Gormley and Naum Gabo who base their designs on the human form. I eventually came up with this design and I’m really pleased with the finished result.”

Lesley joined hundreds of other pupils from across south Wales to showcase their design projects.

All finalists had their own stand at the event and presented their hard work to over 500 scientists, engineers, students, parents, employers and teachers.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners,” said Ray Collier, chief executive of Careers Wales West, who co-ordinated the event.

“I’ve been very impressed with the high standard of entries for the competitions and the enthusiasm across all schools and year groups.”
