Most motorists and pedestrians travelling through Victoria Place, Haverfordwest, are unaware that beneath them is a huge vaulted void where 176 years ago architect William Owen built an arched undercroft to support the imposing terrace.

Agricultural land agent and valuer Edward Perkins told members and guests of Haverfordwest Civic Society at their recent annual supper that this impressive structure demonstrates the high architectural standard introduced by William Owen, who also built the New Bridge, the Shire Hall and other key buildings.

Mr Perkins likened the society’s role as protectors of the town’s built heritage to his own as preserver of the countryside and its buildings.

He referred to the Lloyd family of Cilciffeth in the Gwaun Valley, founders of Haverfordwest Grammar School, who owned over 3,000 acres in Pembrokeshire in 1610. Currently pursuing a tour guide course, he offered his support for any guided tour initiative the Civic Society may wish to promote.
