TV producers will meet with residents featured in a BBC Wales series documenting the lives of residents on Milford Haven’s Mount Estate following mixed feedback about the show.

The four part programme ‘The Mount: A Welsh Estate’, has proved a major talking point since it first aired on BBC One Wales three weeks ago.

However, there has been some criticism that the show has reinforced negative sterotypes.

Jane McSparron, is one of the residents featured in the show, she has lived on the estate for 22 years. She said there were positives and negatives to the coverage.

“I think that the BBC hasn’t shown the Mount in its true form. It has shown the down sides to it, like the drinking problems on the estate and the unemployment, but they didn’t interview a huge variety of people.

“I think that if they spoke to more people, it would have been a truer picture.

“The only down side is that I found out that my nieces had a bit of grief at school,”

But Jane added: “Other than that it has been really positive. I have had a lot of people coming up to me, saying that the show was really good and how much they have enjoyed it.

“I know a lot of people have complained about the show, but I’ve been having a bit of a laugh with people about it.”

Chairman of the Mount Resource Centre, Kathy Gray, who featured in the first episode along with daughter Bethan, said she had received ‘mixed reviews’ and said it is important producers received feedback from residents about the show.

Ms Gray said: “There has always been a stigma attached to the estate and I cannot say the show is making the estate look bad but I need to watch all four episodes before I decide whether I think it is a fair representation of the estate.”

There had been speculation a face-to-face meeting between BBC producers and residents was due to be held yesterday (Wednesday) at the Mount Resource Centre. However, a BBC Wales spokesman confirmed “there will be a meeting in the near future” but not on Wednesday as expected.

Last Monday, October 24, 119,000 viewers tuned in to see working couple Stacey and Roger Davies, and Jo, whose two children are in care, as she battles with alcoholism.

The first show had attracted 169,000 viewers.

The concluding part of The Mount: A Welsh Estate will be shown next Monday on BBC One Wales at 10.35pm.
