THE search is on for Neyland’s good neighbours as a new scheme is proposed for the area.

With the aim of setting up a Good Neighbour Scheme in Neyland, a public meeting will be held at St Clements Church Hall at 7pm tonight (Thursday).

Councillor Simon Hancock, who will chair the meeting, said that the scheme aims to support people in the community, by doing small jobs that they are unable to do themselves.

This includes helping with shopping, cooking, transport, or household repairs.

Cllr Hancock said: “The point is to provide a basic level of assistance to help people live independent lives within the community, and at the same time bind the community even closer together.”

A small group of volunteers within Neyland or the boundary area will be recruited to oversee the running of the scheme, and take it in turns to co-ordinate volunteers to do jobs within the community.

Cllr Hancock added: “Given the demographics of Neyland, where the elderly form a significant proportion of the population, the scheme has got considerable potential to assist the people of the town.”
