A pressure group has withdrawn its UK legal challenge against the South Hook LNG terminal but a spokesman insisted it hadn't given up the fight.

After receiving legal advice, Safe Haven - which was due to seek a judicial review of the LNG planning alterations made in 2005/2006 at the High court in January - has announced it will be dropping legal action.

A spokesman for Safe Haven said: "The case now goes to Europe and indeed, in a parallel process, evidence is being presented to a European Parliament Committee on this whole issue next week."

A spokesman for South Hook LNG said: "In numerous reviews before the courts it has been determined that due process had been followed and consents had been properly granted.

"Safe Haven may continue to pursue matters in Europe.

"We believe this will have no impact on our ability to continue construction of the South Hook Terminal and start it up next summer."

The Safe Haven spokesman added: "The companies continue to protest that safety is their top priority.

"Safe Haven simply asks them to prove it; one day it will have to be answered."
