It is well worth it

LEANNE Wood in the Welsh Assembly has called for a policy to increase local procurement at all levels of government.

We are well behind the Scottish level and every percent increase creates about a thousand jobs. Now there is a stronger argument for her proposal.

The global food industry is not telling the truth about ingredients. Buy from the faceless global market a meat pie or lasagne and we now know it may be made with horse meat, but not what else is in it. If you or I choose to take the risk that is our decision, but patients and children have no choice.

Buy from the local butcher or caterer and they will tell you the ingredients because they know them.

If public bodies supported our farmers, retailers and caterers, not only would those eating be healthier, so would our high streets and economy. If all the meetings in our county had plates of local biscuits instead of supermarket ones, the meetings would result in several thriving bakeries, if nothing else.

Urge your councillors to ask their purchasing department to take up the idea, it’s worth the effort and the little extra cost. I am sure the horses would agree.
