Scourge of the streets

IT MAY not be a priority in these times of council budget cuts, but the local authority must make greater efforts to halt the scourge of our county town’s streets which now appear to be overwhelmed by dog mess.

Of course, ultimate responsibility lies with the dog owners who are too lazy to pick up after their animals, leaving a filthy mess for pedestrians, children and other dog walkers to run the gauntlet of.

I have a dog and I always pick up after it. I am sick and tired of dirty looks from other people who clearly assume I am as irresponsible as those that don’t think twice about leaving excrement in the street.

There are people out there who know how to look after a dog and their home area properly.

It should also not be up to the street cleaner to pick up, which seems to be the attitude of some owners, he has enough work to do.

Since the sad closure of St Thomas Church, the path around it, the Parade and the road near the bowling green have become an absolute disgrace.

These irresponsible dog owners need to be caught and hit where it hurts, with a fixed penalty notice which will hopefully serve as a reminder that leaving poo in the street is actually against the law.
