WITH reference to the report in the Western Telegraph on September 17 – Memorial erected for the still born babies born between 1928 and 1975, regarding babies taken from their mother and buried without any ritual.

Obviously I cannot speak for any other undertaker, but between 1964-1975, possibly later, I could have been the undertaker responsible for the burial of many of these babies, plus not only still born, but babies of up to one month old, with a proper traditional coffin purpose made as per contract specification.

Services were conducted by a Vicar or Minister at every interment and to my knowledge, the families concerned would have been given the date and time of burials.

Also, if not in attendance, these families could have been shown where their child had been buried by myself, the hospital or grave diggers at the time. To say that these graves were there and that no one knew about them is absolutely untrue.

These graves were all numbered and should be very easy to find. I would also like to mention, that when requested to support this project, I readily agreed when it was decided what they were intending to do. I did enquire from time to time, but heard nothing. I was absolutely disgusted and deeply hurt, to see this photograph in the paper. I was probably the only one not in the photo, who was more involved over the years than anyone. May I re-iterate, that no child of any age, or indeed adults’ funerals that I have arranged, have been done without a vicar, the late Rev Canon Fuller and the late Rev D Richards of Llangwm, would have officiated a committal service at the graveside to all, at my request.
