SIR Eric Howells is to be congratulated for bringing William Shakespeare and God both together into his same letter “Your future is in your own hands.”
I whole heartedly agree with him in his premise that “people retain their independence as long as possible”.
He admits that ideally it would be nice if the local authority would provide these (warden attended flats so as to encourage people to retain their independence for longer, indeed for as long as possibly viable).
I believe it is wholly appropriate to ask why do local authorities NOT provide more suitable accommodation?
In my mind part of the answer lies with a previous Conservative Government’s housing policies. The (late) Margaret Thatcher categorically insisted on the Right to Buy (at a substantial discount) - Local Authority Housing Stock policies!
What then happened to the capital receipts of such sales? Are they still held by the treasury? We deserve to know!
Was it here that we find the roots of the gross miss-match in supply and demand, of appropriate Housing Policy provision?
