I WRITE to complain about the tone that has been used in the paper this week regarding Mr Harries’ application for a slurry lagoon at Velindre, St Nicholas.

I live in St Nicholas (unlike Mr Jackson) and can assure visitors and locals alike that there is no increased smell of slurry pervading the village, as Mr Harries injects his slurry straight into the ground thereby minimising the smell.

There are other dairy farms in the area, are you going to blame Mr Harries for all slurry smells in the area?

The whole point of Mr Harries’ application for a new slurry pit it to protect the environment and to protect Aberbach and to have better control of slurry spreading.

The old tanks were constructed in 1981, they are right on the river’s edge, they need replacing, they only have small capacity which results in more slurry movements at inappropriate times. Whereas the lagoon would be managed every four months.

The objectors seem hellbent on stopping any kind of progress and killing off the tourist trade by their preposterous suggestions.

Farms like Velindre are the very life-blood of Pembrokeshire, there are a myriad of small businesses who depend on farms like this for a living.

It’s time the Western Telegraph supported these businesses instead of farmerbashing just for sensational headlines.

I feel that the opposition are not using accurate facts, we don’t need letters from the USA, as we don’t think the smell will travel that far!

From the silent majority of St Nicholas.
