Whilst on holiday at Meadow House Park, Summerhill, I was unlucky enough to have to go to hospital.

Two paramedics arrived, followed by two ambulancemen, who were faultless in the way they looked after me. They wanted to take me to Withybush Hospital but were told to take me to Carmarthen.

On arrival the ambulance had nowhere to park. I was kept in the ambulance for almost two hours because there was nowhere to put me.

I was very well looked after by the ambulance crew and a doctor. In the end, I was diverted to Withybush, the first choice of the crew.

At this hospital I was given the best treatment and care I have ever been given with the exception of Cosford Royal Air Force Hospital, and I have been in a lot of hospitals in my life.

Too many moan and groan about poor care but not so many thank the people responsible who go that bit further to look after us all.

The ones at the top should take a good look at what goes on on the shopfloor where all the work is done, from the consultants down to the student nurses.

We should go back to when we had matrons, sisters and staff nurses and we could easily tell who was who by their uniforms. I have seen sisters fetch and take away bottles and bedpans, I have also seen a male patient pleading for a bottle, only to be told by the nurse at the station she sits at that she couldn’t find anyone to get one for him.

That wouldn’t have happened in the old days.

We are repeatedly told what a mess the NHS is in. Sort out the overpaid at the top and let the doctors run the wards and other departments and get rid of this culture of nurses saying ‘I will find someone to do it’ and make them do it themselves.

Nursing used to be a vocation.

Now there are too many who clock in and clock out again with just a few who really care, and they are the ones who get put upon — but thank the Lord they are there, I take my hat off to them.

I don’t expect anything to be done with this letter, but it would be nice if it was known that we still have the best health service, it just needs a good shake-up at the top.
