FOUR generations of my family have been enjoying holidays in your beautiful county using tents, caravans, cottages and apartments.

Since retirement I have a part-time job in our local tourist information centre and consequently take a big interest in tourism in the UK.

I was disheartened a couple of years ago when your local authority decided not to have a printed annual A4 visitor guide, especially when tourism must be the major earner in Pembrokeshire.

Thank goodness common sense was seen and it was restored the following year.

(It may well all be available on the internet, but believe me visitors still like a proper paper guide.) But then another blow was given to your county tourism by moving your Haverfordwest TIC from its superb position near the town centre and the bus station to behind the library at the top of town – similarly in Milford Haven.

Now to Settlands – the beach between Broad and Little Haven.

In January there was a landslip on the road which resulted in a closure of the road connecting the two Havens, I would have expected that this would have been given top priority and fixed within a month.

I have just returned from my third holiday break in the area to find that nothing has been done to fix the problem.

It probably needs a compulsory land purchase to route the road a little inland which surely should have been attended to within days (like moving the stones from the road in Newgale).

We have just had half-term and soon the key holiday season will be upon us – and visitors to the Havens will have to put up with an access calamity which should have fixed months ago.

It will put them off rebooking for next year especially when they find out that the problem occurred ages ago and nothing has been done about it.

The Havens are obviously struggling with falling tourism revenue with the closure of the shop/cafe in Little Haven, and the closure of the Galleon pub and the fish and chip shop in Broad Haven, without having to put up with the road closure between them going on and on.

So come on Pembrokeshire County Council – you have the UK’s only coastal national park, arguably the best beaches in Wales, a mass of excellent tourist attractions for all the family, a brilliant coastal bus service – so plan to positively encourage your hard won visitors (and residents) by getting the Settlands road fixed – SOON.
