SHORTLY after the war when I was in the Royal Navy we held a courtesy visit to the German Naval Academy in Flensburg.

The final event was a garden party for senior naval officers. To the sound of military music I interpreted between senior naval officers, some who were there under parole, and visiting UK senior naval officers.

The one topic of concern to the German Officers was “why did we not combine at the end of the war and fight the agents of godless communism”

– we could have stopped the Russians once and for all.

That is why I support the UK membership of the European Union, even now war could so easily be started again if every nation goes its own way.
