BEING on the point of opening our new solar village here in Pembrokeshire, we believe that the government should be encouraging the development of highly energy efficient new homes with their own built in energy production as an alternative to the £30bn required to fund Hinkley.

The solar village, due to house its first occupants shortly, will enjoy virtually free energy all year round, thanks to its category A++ rating for energy efficiency, passive heating and the solar panels which provide each home with 8,000 kWh of electricity over the year.

All this for no more than 12% (£15,000) of the construction cost of a three-bed family home.

With the right incentives 100,000 new homes every year with these energy features could provide up to 8GW of installed capacity as well as creating an additional 25,000 jobs.

These are not fictitious figures.

We have proven that relatively simple technical solutions exist to provide a secure 24-hour localised energy supply. The days of large central power generation centres are quite possibly nearing an end.
