I AM surprised that you chose to publish such a prejudiced letter from L Waterman of Milford Haven in which he insults our national anthem.
We have been enthusiastically singing it for over 70 years, and have rarely heard an objection.
The most constant element of our United Kingdom is the continuing leadership from Her Majesty.
It is very unlikely that one third of the population are republicans, one third floaters and only one third monarchists, and I challenge the source of this data.
It amazes me that as an objector, the writer should quote verse six, as most of the population have no idea that there are so many verses, let alone have read or sung them all.
( I have looked up the lyrics on four websites and only find four verses ) May we ask the writer if he has a suggestion of an alternative?
Maybe ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, ‘Jerusalem’, or perhaps ‘Rule Britannia’?
The latter might clash with the clear ambitions within the EU of the German national anthem, ‘Deutschland uber Alles’.
I wonder if the writer is not only a republican, but also a supporter of the federal state of Europe.
God save the Queen!
