REGARDING the letter from Ian Campbell from Pembroke ‘The lies of the Leavers’ – in the Senedd Chamber of the National Assembly a Leave campaigner told me: “The lies that took us into the European Union are greater lies than these lies that have taken us out.”
This is the kind of doubledealing that has got politics into the dreadful post-truth, alternative facts world we live in. The Westminster Government’s White Paper on Brexit is the flimsiest and most vapid of things.
Surely, any of us who really care for our nation will be looking for three key commitments in any such White Paper. Welsh farmers, manufacturers and traders should continue to access the single market without barriers or tariffs, we must get security that funding will continue for Wales, and EU citizens in Wales should have their rights protected.
We were promised that leaving the EU would not deprive Wales of a penny in our funds, indeed that it would give us more money. Now these promises are shown to be based on lies. Article 50 doesn’t just trigger leaving the EU, it also triggers an attempt by Westminster politicians to control Wales again.
