SWORD fights, a talking cat and rampaging rats – this year’s Torch Theatre pantomime has all the ingredients needed for some perfectly festive family fun.

This time the Torch Theatre Company tells the story of Dick Whittington and his adventures as he travels from Gloucester to London to find his fortune, accompanied by his trusty, trendy cat Tommy (Oraine Johnson).

The role of Dick is played by Sion Ifan, who will be familiar to S4C audiences having performed in Ble Mae Cyw and Con Passionate.

Sion recently graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is joined by two other acting graduates in Gwawr Loader who plays Dick’s love interest Alice and Jordan Bernarde as villainous King Rat.

No pantomime is complete without a larger than life dame played by Torch Theatre favourite, actor Dion Davies.

With outrageous costumes, ‘terrible’ jokes, innuendos and even a special mention of Milford Haven Mayor Guy Woodham; Davies’ hilarious performance as Sarah the Cook (Dick’s mother) ensured that both the younger and older audience members enjoyed a laugh throughout.

There is clever use of video projection during the show, as well as plenty of original catchy songs to enjoy (which you are guaranteed to be singing to yourself days, if not weeks, later!) and particular mention must be given to Sion’s strong vocal performance.

The best judges of any successful pantomime are of course the hundreds of children watching in the audience and it was clear to see that Dick Whittington had all the essential ingredients.

Children were absorbed in the adventures of Dick and his friends, and it was clear to see that Peter Doran’s take on the classic tale had certainly captured their imagination.

The Torch Theatre Company presents Dick Whittington is written and directed by Doran, music and lyrics by James Williams and designed by Sean Crowley.

The pantomime is open to the public from December 21 to 29, with both matinee and evening performances available.
