A WEEK of activities to mark Herbrandston’s ‘doubly thankful’ status has been held, culminating with an open air service on the village green.
Herbrandston is one of three ‘thankful villages’ in Wales which saw all of its men return from the First and Second World Wars.
Its contribution to the war effort was marked earlier this month, thanks to a donation by a group of motorcyclists.
A slate plaque was unveiled in the village during a service organised by Dorothy Walters and members of the Aberystwyth and District Motorcycle Action Group.
Medwyn Parry, chairman of the action group, said he felt it was vital to break through the “embarrassment of silence” and recognise every thankful village.
“Their contribution to the war was just as valid as that of those who lost people."
The week’s entertainment included a dog show on the green, a walking treasure hunt, a fun day with a bouncy castle and magician, as well as sing-a-longs and a picnic.
Lay minister Steve Traynar said: “The week went well, there was plenty of stuff for the kids to do and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
“Sunday’s commemoration service was led by the Rev Bill Lewis. It was like a Songs of Praise service, with a variety of bible reading, prayers and hymns.
“Everyone that came along thought it was really nice and we all enjoyed tea and cakes in the hall afterwards.”
