MINI musicians at Milford Haven Junior School are getting into the swing of the new term, buoyed by a fantastic performance in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall this summer.

Accompanied by more than 50 parents, teachers and friends, the school’s Big Band travelled to Birmingham, to take part in the National Music for Youth Festival.

Dressed as daffodils and leeks, the 64 band members played their hearts out, wowing the crowd with a Tom Jones medley.

“It was amazing for the parents to see their children perform on such a big stage – we even got the English crowd singing along with us,” said band leader Sonja Groves.

Band member Caitlyn said:”It was amazing. The building was huge and I felt really small on the stage. Everything was shiny and looked polished.’

“I played the drum kit,” said Ben. “It was a very expensive one and the cymbals were really loud.”

Fellow musician Alice added: “It was so fun to see the audience all singing and swaying when we played Delilah. I loved it!”

School headteacher Mr Lyn Rees said the trip, which cost around £3,000, was only possible thanks to the generous donations of local people and businesses.

“The parents and children raised lots of money themselves by organising raffles, concerts, cake stalls and numerous other activities. A huge thanks to everyone,” he said.

And with the money left over, the school has been able to refurbish its drum kit, and buy some new instruments for pupils who might otherwise struggle to afford one.

The band is also working on its programme for its upcoming Christmas concert, which will include a Disney’s Frozen medley and an Adele medley.
