STAFF at Murco Refinery stepped up to the plate last week, organising a fabulous 1940s-themed cake sale to raise money for charity.

Dressed in vintage frocks and land girl-inspired outfits, refinery workers cooked up a host of tasty treats to sell to co-workers and raise cash for cancer charity Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning event.

Thanks to match funding from Murco, the baking troupe’s total was doubled, bringing this year’s donation up to more than £1,600.

Special guest for the afternoon was ex-Scarlets player Dafydd Jones, who had the task of tasting all the entries and picking the day’s ‘star baker’ – an accolade that went to Mandy Allen.

Also enjoying a slice of the action was 94-year-old Dilys Hamner MBE, honorary committee president for the Pembrokeshire branch of Macmillan.

Dilys has been fundraising for Macmillan for 46 years, and was full of praise for the team’s attention to detail.

“The outfits and decorations are just wonderful,” she said.

“It always amazes that our employees make such an effort, it makes me really proud,” said Murco spokesman Sue Pugh.

Next April sees Murco’s fundraising partnership with Macmillan come to an end after three years.

So far the firm has raised around £36,000, but Sue said she hopes to bring the grand total up to £50,000 before the year is out.

Local honorary treasurer Auriol Scourfield said she was very grateful for Murco’s ongoing support, which helps fund Macmillan’s important work in helping people with cancer and their families.
