THE Meads School in Milford Haven bagged an award for its commitment to teaching Welsh as a second language at the Shwmae awards ceremony at Pembrokeshire College on Wednesday, October 15.

The Pembrokeshire County Council Welsh Second Language award was presented to the school for its 'special effort to improve the Welsh ethos of the school in order to raise standards'.

The Shwmae awards were organised by Pembrokeshire County Council Welsh language Advisors Llinos Penfold and Catrin Phillips, to reward local groups and individuals who have made a real effort to promote the Welsh language.

The idea stemmed from a series of 'flashmobs' in Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Narberth and Crymych last year to celebrate 'Shwmae Day' - a day when people of all abilities are encouraged to 'say hello' to speaking Welsh.

Awards were created especially for the occasion by the blacksmith Eifion Thomas, from Dinas.

Sponsoring the evening were the Port of Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire College and Pembrokeshire County Council, with each of the 12 awards being sponsored by a Welsh organisation.

Also claiming awards from the south of the county were Angela Jones, who works as a health visitor in Haverfordwest, and Pembroke Dock Community School, who won the Audience Award for their film.
