A BAND which has served the local community at civic events, and represented Milford Haven overseas, celebrates its 40th birthday this year.

President of Milford Haven Town Band, Cllr Guy Woodham, hosted a 40th Anniversary Ball for around 60 members of the band and its supporters at Pill Social Centre on Saturday, October 18

Cllr Woodham said the event was planned to give something back to the band, and thank members for everything they have done – and for once got the chance to celebrate without having to perform!

The night was also an opportunity to recognise two members of the band who have been involved since the beginning - Jeff Bourne and Jill Byrant, both of whom received 40 years’ service awards.

The night received support from the Port of Milford Haven, Celtic Wine, TESCO Milford Haven, Sitting Pretty and Snapdragon.

Cllr Woodham added: “The support the night received was fantastic and testament to the great community work that the town band undertake.

“I am also grateful to Scott Gregory who provided a great meal and Stuart Maxwell for the entertainment.”

This year has seen the Town Band travel to Ireland, host an anniversary concert at the Torch Theatre as well as undertake their many other civic and community functions around the county.

In addition to its senior and junior sections, a beginners’ section was also started earlier this year to help people develop their creativity and have fun too.

It is led by Junior band leader Bron Parrat, who has played in bands since she was eight years old.

Band chairman Sian Garside joined when she was nine, and said being part of the band was like being part of a big family.

"You get a big sense of achievement when it all goes well, and everyone is so supportive," she said.

There is still one more event to go this year and that will be the band's 'music and mice pies' Christmas concert at the Pill Social Centre on Friday, December 5.
