A COFFEE morning in Milford Haven has raised £400 to help kick-start a project helping homeless people in Pembrokeshire.

The raffle, stalls and refreshments at St Katharine’s Church Hall on Friday (February 6) were drumming up cash for the Community Kitchen project – set to launch on February 16 – which aims to provide hot meals for those who are sleeping rough, or just struggling financially.

Set up by Milford Haven woman Sara Hurley, the Community Kitchen will be held at the church hall, and aims to provide a ‘warm, friendly, non-judgmental environment to eat, have a cup of tea, play board games or just have someone to talk to’.

Between 10am and 3pm, hot meals will be offered to people of all ages, including those with children.

No prices will be displayed, and people will instead be able to pay what they can afford.

Anyone sleeping rough will also be offered free food, a sleeping bag, and toiletries if needed.

“There are no forms to complete, no referrals, and no vouchers needed: if someone is in need they are welcome, no questions asked,” said Sara

Sara, who worked as a housing officer for 10 years, came up with the idea after becoming aware of how many people were either homeless or struggling to provide for themselves locally.

And in just a few weeks she has been overwhelmed with support from the community, including help from willing local volunteers, and donations from local businesses such as Kwik Save Milford Haven, which donated £200 of food to help the project get underway.

“I am absolutely stunned by people’s kindness and generosity,” said Sara.

The Community Kitchen will be open on Monday, Thursday and Friday during half term, with a gran opening planned for next month.
